Bulger's Hollow Recreation Area
Managed by US Army Corps of Engineers
Bulger's Hollow Recreation Area is a multi-use recreational facility located 3 miles north of Clinton, Iowa off Highway 67. This recreation area site on the banks of the Mississippi River give's the visitor a captivating view of pool 13, the widest pool on the Upper Mississippi River.
Bulger's Hollow Recreation Area had been operated for many years by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a free camping facility. The Corps' gradually added amenities to the area to now turn the facility into a Class C recreational site. The latest change at the park will be the installation of a self-registration vault for collecting fees during the peak recreation season to help reduce the costs of operation and provide for a more controlled camping operation.
A unique aspect in the operation of this area is in the amount of work accomplished by our Volunteer Host Program. Beginning in 1990, volunteer park hosts have been utilized at this area to provide camper registration, information, surveillance and custodial services. In return for these services, the Corps provides the host with the necessary supplies to perform their tasks. Visitors and campers especially enjoy the peaceful scenery and remoteness of this lesser-known Corps' recreation area.
